First, the CCXR, which is a standard CCX that's been converted to use ethanol and produces 1018 HP and 780 ft.-lbs. of torque. Those fortunate enough to already own a CCX can have their current vehicle retrofitted with the biofuel mill if desired.

The second vehicle to grace the stand will be the CCGT, which was produced in order to meet FIA GT1 series regulations. As such, the 806 HP supercharged 4.7L V8 has been nixed in order to bring power output down below the 600 HP mark. To do so, they removed the huffers and bored the V8 out to 5.0L. In addition to the HP reduction, the weight had to be increased and the aerodynamics had to be altered in order to meet regulations. Surprisingly, the aero changes produce less downforce than the standard CCGT. Devolving to meet racing standards is nothing new, but it still brings a little tear to our eye.

The press release is after the jump and expect a gallery of both vehicles up before night's end.

Dubspeed Driven Road Test - 2007 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

Click for Larger Image

Story by Dubspeed Driven Associate Editor, Carl Modesette
Photos courtesy of General Motors

Arguably, no other car in American history has a legacy as rich as the Chevrolet Corvette. From humble beginnings in 1953 with a 150 horsepower inline-six engine, to today’s 505 horsepower world-assaulting Z06, the Corvette has run the full spectrum of sports car ideology. However, recent years have seen the demise of many storied nameplates, while others have been resurrected. Looking forward, can the Corvette continue to capture enthusiasts’ hearts in a performance-rich, horsepower warmonger market?

Click for Larger Image

Nearly every automotive journalist has already accurately reported on the C6 Corvette’s performance prowess. A 400 horsepower LS2 engine propels the ‘Vette to 60 mph in about four and a half seconds, and through the quarter mile in about thirteen seconds flat, if not a shade faster. With a relatively low curb weight just shy of 3300 pounds, and maximum cornering grip a hair’s breadth away from 1.0 g’s, the Corvette offers an overall performance package that few cars can compete with. The fact that it’s reasonably comfortable, gets great fuel mileage, and can swallow a weekend’s worth of luggage (or a pair of golf bags) is icing on the cake. The true strength of the Corvette, however, has traditionally been found on the window sticker. Offered at a price point significantly undercutting its cross-Atlantic rival, the Porsche 911, the ‘Vette is, and continues to be, a value among world-class sports cars.

Click for Larger Image

New to the 6th generation Corvette is the 6-speed Paddle Shift automatic transmission, which we recently had the opportunity to sample. Representing nearly 2/3 of overall Corvette sales (growing to nearly 3/4 excluding the Z06), the automatic transmission is fundamental to the success of the Corvette. This new gearbox adds two cogs to the outgoing C5’s aged 4-speed unit, making better use of the LS2’s torque curve, and at the same time adds a pair of shift paddles to the steering wheel. Rather unconventional in their operation, these paddles are mirror images of one another – pull either one with your forefingers to downshift, and push the top of either one with your thumb to upshift. Typically, these shifter paddles are independent – one for upshifts, the other for downshifts. Seemingly great in theory, these paddles are a bit cumbersome in practice. The small size of the thumb-operated “+” buttons make them difficult to locate quickly, and essentially force the hands into a 9-and-3 position. In addition, pushing forward to upshift is counterintuitive, if not awkward whilst being propelled forward by those 400 horsepower at wide open throttle. The immediacy of shifts commanded by the paddles is also a bit disappointing - one must plan ahead to achieve shifts at the desired instant. Thankfully, use of the paddles is optional, as this slushbox offers both standard and Sport Drive modes. Adaptive electronics are employed to soften shifts under normal acceleration, and stiffen them up under hard acceleration. Performance in the Sport Drive mode should satisfy any “enthusiast” demanding an automatic transmission in the first place, relegating the paddle shifters largely to the realm of conversation material on the way to the golf course.

Click for Larger Image

Despite this author’s quibbles over the new Paddle Shift transmission, make no mistake – the C6 Corvette is still a phenomenal performance automobile. It’s rare to see a successful marriage of performance, comfort, and practicality – much less with the relative economy and value that the Corvette offers. 27 miles per gallon on the highway from a V-8 making 400 horsepower doesn’t happen every day. This is an attainable driver’s car that can actually be driven daily.

Click for Larger Image

And yet, there are other dimensions to the Corvette that most fail to comment on, dimensions easily overlooked when overwhelmed by the knowledge that such performance can be had at so relatively low a price. Those dimensions are quality, longevity, and staying power. It’s tough to argue the numbers: in 2005, the C6 Corvette’s introductory year, sales grew nearly 10% over the C5’s final year of production. 2006 sales should show even stronger gains, with the addition of the aforementioned 6-speed automatic transmission and the fire-breathing Z06 model. But will this trend continue?

Click for Larger Image

Undeniably, Chevrolet has gone to great lengths to ensure that the Corvette can compete with the Porsche 911 on paper, leveraging their tradition of powertrain prowess. Lay their respective spec sheets side by side and dare someone not to choose the Corvette, when price plays into the decision. However remove price as an object, and the decision becomes tougher. Quite frankly, the Corvette can’t compete with the 911, much less many other cars both foreign and domestic, when it comes to judging overall quality. While the look and feel of interior materials have improved in the C6 iteration, the overall package still looks – and feels – just like any other pedestrian Chevrolet. It’s a bit disheartening to climb inside the Corvette and find a standard-issue Chevy Malibu steering wheel staring you in the face. Shut the driver’s door and begin to get comfortable, and you’ll notice that the center stack housing the audio and climate controls will flex alarmingly when you rest your knee against it. Scan around the interior and you’ll notice that the textured aluminum trim on the door-release buttons and shifter knob doesn’t match the painted silver trim on the center stack, dash, and steering wheel. That’s a lot to stomach from a car whose sticker starts upwards of 40-large, no matter how fast it might be. While driving, there also remains a difficult to quantify rough-around-the edges feel that’s absent in a Porsche, much less other cars in the same price range as the Corvette – in fact, some cars costing half as much as a Corvette exhibit better overall quality and feel.

Click for Larger Image

So what is it about the Corvette that makes it so popular? It’d be easy to dismiss it as value advantage, but in this writer’s humble opinion, that doesn’t fully capture the essence of the Corvette’s appeal. The demographics of Corvette buyers are what one would expect: predominantly middle-aged males with a median income of around $150K (about the same demographics as the 911, except triple the salary). No surprises here, really. Yet consider the historical significance of such buyers – these are people who were in their teens during the 1960’s and early 1970’s. This was the era of the musclecar, when horsepower was king and the Corvette was that upper-echelon car that everyone dreamed about, but few could afford. Back then, the European sports cars were far rarer and Japanese sports cars had yet to enter the scene. Fast forward to now, and those then-teenage dreamers can finally afford the car of their dreams – and it’s actually halfway practical to own one.

Click for Larger Image

But take heed Chevrolet, because the clock is ticking and Baby Boomers are aging. Backs are getting bad, and the need to fulfill visceral rushes of acceleration is waning. A new generation of buyers is coming of age and buying power - a generation who’s grown up on the quality of Honda Accords and Toyota Camrys, and the performance of highly-tuned Japanese and German sports cars. Gone are the days of the adage “there’s no replacement for displacement.” The fact that more than one automaker can reliably extract over 100 horsepower per liter from smaller displacement engines makes even the Z06’s 505 horsepower, 7.0 liter engine seem, well, rather underachieving.

Click for Larger Image

The fact is that tomorrow’s Corvette buyers will be inundated with a dizzying array of attractive alternatives, and to them, the Corvette won’t hold the same symbolic appeal, for the emissions mandates of the 70’s and 80’s weren’t so kind to performance cars. Merely competing on paper won’t be good enough; tomorrow’s Corvette will need to compete in the flesh. That is, the Corvette will need to be a paragon of quality as well as performance. If The General can raise the bar on quality (and I truly hope they will), they’ll ensure the Corvette will be around for years to come.

We want to know YOUR thoughts, so please leave a comment!

Lincoln Announces MKX to Start Under $35,000

DEARBORN , Mich. , Sept. 22, 2006 – As crossover sales escalate at a blistering pace, the all-new 2007 Lincoln MKX joins the Lincoln showroom this November at a starting price under $35,000. Indeed, all these innovations underline the individual character and premium standard of the MINI. And while each and every detail has been changed or modified, the new model naturally retains all the proven and unmistakable features of the MINI clearly recognisable at very first sight. This applies both to the silhouette of this compact two-door immediately recognisable from every angle and to the car’s equally unique and agile driving characteristics. The power units and transmissions, suspension and steering, brakes and safety systems are all brand-new developments from the ground up. And all these features serve to give the new MINI that legendary go-kart feeling right from the start – but now with an even higher standard of agility than before. This, quite literally, is MINI at its best – both in design and handling.

The new MINI is entering the market in the guise of the MINI Cooper (88 kW/120 hp) and MINI Cooper S (128 kW/175 hp), with the MINI One “basic” version following somewhat later. And once again, the new MINI will also be available with a turbodiesel offering a particularly high standard of all-round economy in the drivetrain.

Two new petrol engines with innovative highlights in technology.
The new MINI Cooper and the new MINI Cooper S come with two four-cylinder petrol engines each displacing 1.6 litres. Both of these power units are the first representatives of a new range of engines boasting innovative features from the ground up. They each come with two overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder driven by a chain. The engine block and cylinder head, in turn, are cast out of a special aluminium alloy. In terms of both power, performance and efficiency, these innovative drive units set new standards in the MINI segment, boasting many design features and technical details so far only to be found in higher segments of the market. A volume flow-controlled oil pump, for example, as well as a water pump switching off automatically when not required, serve to reduce fuel consumption to an even lower level than usual. And at the same time it almost goes without saying that the new power units comply in full with the strict Euro 4 emission standard.

The MINI Cooper features a normal-aspiration power unit developing maximum output of 88 kW/120 hp at 6,000 rpm and peak torque of 160 Nm/118 lb-ft at 4,250 rpm. The intake valves are controlled in a fully variable process by the BMW Group’s absolutely unique VALVETRONIC technology, allowing the engine to breathe freely, without the usual restrictions imposed by a throttle butterfly. Valve lift and opening times are masterminded by infinite electronic control adjusting to the driver’s needs for power and performance. This highly efficient valve management combines superior fuel economy, a high standard of motoring culture, spontaneous response and optimised emission management, thus offering a new combination of qualities never seen before.

The even more powerful engine featured in the new MINI Cooper S is a turbocharged power unit with direct gasoline injection. Turbocharging is provided by an elaborately designed twin-scroll turbocharger fed with a separate flow of exhaust gas from two cylinders each. Benefiting from this configuration, the turbocharger cuts in right from the start at low engine speeds, almost completely eliminating the so-called “turbo gap” when accelerating.

Maximum torque of 240 Nm or 177 lb-ft comes at just 1,600 rpm, maximum output of this turbocharged four-cylinder is 128 kW/175 hp at 5,500 rpm. Apart from extremely high output per litre of approximately 110 hp, the combination of a twin-scroll turbocharger and direct fuel injection also ensures superior fuel economy, a high standard of motoring culture, and very efficient emission control.

Evolution in exterior design, revolution in the cockpit.

The revised body design of the new MINI not only considers the even stricter safety standards to be observed in future, but also – with the car’s dimensions increasing only slightly, for example with exterior length up by approximately 70 millimetres or 2.76´´ – accentuates the proportions and design features so typical of the MINI. As a result, the new MINI not only retains the proportions so typical of the car, but naturally also boasts characteristic features such as the hexagon grille, large headlights, the diagonal joint between the engine compartment lid and side direction indicators as a clear reminiscence to the welding seam on the classic Mini stretching out over exactly the same connection line in the past, and the upright rear light clusters.

From the side, the car is naturally still dominated by glazing all round the passenger cell, the extremely short body overhangs both front and rear, and the extra-large wheels, all of these features once again accentuating the masculine “stance-on-the-wheels” character so typical of the MINI. “Evolution on the exterior of the car is supplemented by revolution in the interior”, states MINI’s Chief Designer Gert Hildebrand. So reflecting the formula of offering “maximum car on minimum space”, the interior of the new MINI looks even lighter than before, but is even more generous in its features. Moved far to the outside, the air vents accentuate the horizontal orientation of the dashboard and create a harmonious transition from the cockpit to the door lining. Through its separate elements and dividing lines, the dashboard allows superior customisation with inserts more sporting, technical or elegant, depending on the colour and material chosen. And last but not least, the decal elements may be supplemented by up to 16 chrome-plated trim surrounds on the instruments and air vents themselves. Now even larger than before, the Center Speedo, a genuine MINI icon in the cockpit, comprises all entertainment and, as an option, navigation functions over and above the analogue-face speedometer. Through its high, central position, the Center Speedo allows optimum ergonomic control by both the driver and front passenger, while the slender centre console ensures even more space and roominess within the footwells. Metallic toggle switches again typical of MINI are featured not only in the centre console, but also as function switches to be found for the first time in the roof lining. The conventional ignition key, in turn, has been replaced by an electronic signal transmitter enabling the driver to start the engine simply by pressing the Start/Stop button after having inserted the round chip sensor in the opening next to the steering wheel.

Again, features of this calibre enhance the character of the interior cockpit to an even higher standard. The new MINI is the consistent evolution of its highly successful predecessor. Both in design and in its driving characteristics, the new model takes up all the strengths and elements already boasted on the former MINI, using well-conceived modifications and demanding technology to give these features an even higher level of quality. And it virtually goes without saying that the new MINI fulfils all the high quality, technology and safety standards of the BMW Group as a whole, thus ranking supreme in its segment in every respect.

Chrysler Announces 2007 Sebring Pricing

Chrysler Sebring sedan offers more than ever before in mid-size segment

“The 2007 Chrysler Sebring represents the next phase of the Chrysler brand’s passenger car renaissance,” said Rooney. “The Sebring builds on the winning formula that began with the award-winning Chrysler 300 in the large car segment. The new X3 will feature an updated version of the 3.0-liter inline six that produces 260hp, and 225lb-ft of torque. This is an increase of 35hp over the outgoing model, and drops 0-60 times to just under 7.0 seconds.

Other improvements include a new version of BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control which adds Brake Drying and Dynamic Traction Control, a first for a BMW SUV.

Full details after the jump.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ - June 27, 2006… Building on its reputation as an agile, fun to drive, attainable BMW Sports Activity Vehicle, the X3 receives a significant freshening for the 2007 model year. It begins, of course, with a performance upgrade. It also includes additional safety features, revamped exterior styling, an increase in the level of interior refinement as well as new luxury and performance oriented options. Reflecting its increase in performance, it also gets a new name - the BMW X3 3.0si. As a BMW SAV, it will again come standard with BMW’s innovative xDrive all-wheel drive. The 2007 BMW X3 3.0si will arrive in U.S. showrooms early this fall.

A new engine and transmission choices offer even greater performance
The BMW X3 3.0si will be powered by the award-winning aluminum/magnesium 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, featuring VALVETRONIC technology. In the X3 3.0si, this engine produces 260 hp at 6,600 rpm and 225 lb-ft of torque at 2,500 rpm. This represents an increase of 35 horsepower and 11 lb-ft of torque. True to its BMW heritage, the X3 3.0si will be offered with a six-speed manual as standard equipment. A new six-speed STEPTRONIC automatic transmission will be offered as a no cost option in place of the previous 5-speed. The performance and feel are both improved thanks to incredibly quick gear changes. The result is a significant reduction in acceleration times for both transmissions. With the six-speed manual, the X3 3.0si accelerates from 0 - 60 mph is 6.9 seconds, an improvement of 0.7 seconds over the previous X3 3.0i. With the new six-speed STEPTRONIC automatic, the X3 3.0si goes from 0 - 60 mph in 7.1 seconds, a 0.8 second improvement. In typical BMW fashion, this increase in performance does not come at the sacrifice of efficiency.

An enhanced Dynamic Stability Control system works in concert with standard xDrive all-wheel drive
The Dynamic Stability Control system in the 2007 X3 3.0si includes all of the latest safety enhancements. These include Brake Drying to improve emergency stopping capability in wet conditions, Brake Standby to give an edge in emergency braking, Start-off Assistant and Brake Fade Compensation.

The 2007 X3 3.0si becomes the first BMW SAV to include Dynamic Traction Control as part of DSC. At the touch of a button, DTC waits for a higher threshold of wheel-slip before engaging DSC functions. This helps when starting off on loose snow, for example. It also offers the driving enthusiast another dimension of driving joy.

In order to ensure a high degree of stability and traction under all conditions, the xDrive all-wheel drive system, DSC and the engine management system are networked via Integrated Chassis Management. Working together, the systems will react to a loss of traction at any wheel by first utilizing xDrive to move traction to the front or rear axle as appropriate. Then, if necessary, DSC will work to help stabilize the vehicle.

Styling enhancements inside and out distinguish the 2007 BMW X3 3.0si
The front styling of the X3 3.0si has been enhanced with a new front bumper that frames a new, slightly larger twin-kidney grill. The cleaner headlight assembly no longer includes the DOT amber reflector, which moves to the fender. The optional Xenon Adaptive Headlights now include the corona light rings. The headlight washers, which are included with the Cold Weather Package, now retract into the bumper. The new rear bumper is highlighted with chrome exhaust tips. The new taillight cluster includes horizontal LED taillights. Adaptive Brake Lights enable the distinctive new taillights to illuminate along with, and at the same intensity as the brake lights in an emergency stop. Newly styled 17-inch wheels are standard, with 18-inch wheels available as a stand-alone option.

The more highly refined interior is immediately apparent. The new dashboard material has a more luxurious grain. The dashboard now has wood trim to match the center console and door pulls. The door panels have been enhanced with solid door pockets and additional upholstery above the armrests. When leather upholstery is ordered, the upholstery on the door panels includes stitching for an added premium luxury detail. The standard multi-function steering wheel is a new three-spoke design. Audiophiles will appreciate the new standard auxiliary input jack located on the back of the center console. For added comfort, 16-way comfort seats are available as an option. These include power headrest adjustment and a two-piece adjustable backrest.

2007 X3 enhancements continue with the packages
The content of the popular Premium Package has been improved to include a compass in the rearview mirror, a Universal Garage Door Opener and power-folding auto-dimming exterior mirrors. BMW Assist now includes four years of service. The Cold Weather Package adds heated rear seats to the heated front seats, headlight washers and ski-bag. A heated steering remains a stand-alone option. For the driving enthusiast, the Sport Package content remains the same. For those who want the ultimate in handling and responsiveness, the optional upgrade now includes mixed-size 19-inch wheels with performance tires.

The styling updates to the 2007 BMW X3 3.0si make this Sports Activity Vehicle even more elegant and comfortable while the performance enhancements, in true BMW tradition, ensure that it remains the vehicle of choice for the driving enthusiast.

Team Toyo™ Drift’s Tanner Foust Wins Round 2 of Formula D Championship

Team Toyo™ Drift’s Tanner Foust captured an overall victory during Round 2 of the Need For Speed Formula D Drift Championship this past weekend in Atlanta, Georgia. Foust piloted his yellow-and-black 450-horsepower AEM/Memphis Car Audio Nissan 350Z to the front of the field of world class competitors while driving on Proxes T1R™ tires from Toyo Tires®.

With this past weekend’s victory Foust has become the second Team Toyo™ Drift driver to win a Need For Speed Formula D Drift Championship round, joining Toyo’s own Ken Gushi for those honors. Foust’s sudden rise to a championship round win is no fluke, as he is a seasoned precision driver for movies such as The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. During the filming of that movie, which will soon appear in theaters, Foust spent three months driving a black Nissan 350Z, stunt-doubling for the movie character “D.K.”. According to Stan Chen, Manager of Events and Motorsports, Toyo Tire (U.S.A.) Corporation, “After spending so much time with the twin turbo Z movie car, transitioning into the AEM/Memphis Car Audio 350Z was pretty straight forward. It used the same Proxes T1R tires, same turbo kit, and other components similar to the actual movie car. This early victory is a great start for Toyo Tires in the Formula D championship.”
To learn more about the Proxes T1R™, Toyo’s flagship ultra-high performance tire, and about Team Toyo™ Drift, log onto toyo.com. The top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited).

Twelve-cylinder biturbo engine with know-how from motorsport

This exclusive performance is made possible by the 5980-cc V12 engine developed by Mercedes-AMG. The engine’s credentials are outstanding: maximum output of 450 kW/612 hp is maintained from 4750 to 5100 rpm, while the maximum torque of 1000 Nm can be called on from 2000 to 4000 rpm. Even as low as 1000 rpm, the AMG V12 biturbo engine already delivers 570 Nm of torque to the crankshaft, while 750 Nm is on tap at 1500 rpm.

When designing and building the V12 engine the AMG designers drew on the vast know-how amassed over many years of motorsport involvement. The AMG V12 engine has a precision-balanced crankshaft made out of high-strength materials, forged pistons made out of special material which is extremely resistant to temperature and pressure, a more effective oil-spray cooling system with a separate individual nozzle for each piston plus larger piston pins. The main and big-end bearings are also made out of improved materials to compensate for peak temperatures and pressures more effectively. The charge cycle in the cylinder heads benefits from optimised combustion chambers and longer opening times of the intake valves. A modified oil pump ensures that all lubrication points are supplied with oil - even in highly demanding conditions. An engine oil cooler is integrated into the AMG front apron, with an additional engine coolant radiator located in the wheel arch.

Highly efficient charge-air cooler

The charge-air cooler has also been redesigned with a low-temperature radiator in the front of the vehicle that is around 70 percent larger. The system works on the principle of the air/water heat exchanger for particularly effective cooling of the intake air (which has been compressed by the turbochargers) before it enters the combustion chambers. The increased surface area of the low-temperature radiator provides a 25 percent reduction in intake temperature and guarantees high power and torque output under all operating conditions and regardless of the outside temperature, even when the engine is operating at full load. The housings of the compressor and turbine in both turbochargers as well as the turbine and compressor wheels have been enlarged to cope with the maximum charge pressure of 1.5 bar.

The electronically controlled fuel supply with newly developed components operates with a variable system pressure between 3.6 and 5.0 bar. Depending on the power requirements and outside temperature, the fuel pressure is variably controlled almost instantly. The engine management system translates the command from the accelerator within milliseconds, delivering an extremely fast response from the engine in all load situations.

AMG sports exhaust system for typical AMG twelve-cylinder vocals

The AMG sports exhaust system with two twin chrome tailpipes in the new V12 design provides the telltale AMG twelve-cylinder vocals on the new S 65 AMG. The new tri-metallic coating used in the catalytic converters provides a faster response from a cold start, improved emission control as well as longer life. Naturally the S 65 AMG fulfils all standard exhaust emissions limits such as EU 4. The ultra-powerful twelve-cylinder unit takes the specific requirements of the U.S. market such as LEV II, “On-Board Diagnosis II” and oxygen sensor diagnosis in its stride.

The special position of the AMG V12 engine was singled out at the “International Engine of the Year Awards 2004”: in the “Best Performance Engine” category the jury chose the 450-kW/612-hp AMG engine as the winner, beating off a field of 70 renowned competitors from Europe, the USA and Japan. In the AMG engine manufacturing facility, each engine is traditionally hand-built according to the “One man, one engine” philosophy. That means that each complete AMG V12 engine is assembled from start to finish by a single technician – documented with the technician’s signature on the AMG engine plate.

World first: newly developed AMG high-performance composite brakes

The completely newly developed AMG high-performance composite brakes based on the ADAPTIVE BRAKE system set new standards in terms of stopping distances, sensitivity and durability. A new twin sliding calliper is used for the front brakes, the kind of innovation people have come to expect from AMG. This new, unique technology combines the advantages of a floating-calliper brake – lower heat transfer to the brake fluid and significantly improved ride comfort due to the way the brake pads are located – with the performance of a large fixed-calliper brake. At the rear a large sliding frame-type calliper provides the braking. Composite brake discs at the front and rear with a diameter of 390 and 365 millimetres respectively ensure the shortest stopping distances, remarkable strength and outstanding sensitivity. The dual-circuit hydraulic braking system is controlled electronically and supports numerous driver assistance functions that improve safety and comfort. Multi-piece 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels with mixed tyres provide the contact with the road. 255/40 ZR 19 tyres are fitted on 8.5-inch-wide wheels at the front, while 275/40 ZR 19 tyres combine with 9.5-inch-wide wheels at the rear.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT 5-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel gearshift paddles

The drive power is transferred to the wheels in the new S 65 AMG via the AMG SPEEDSHIFT five-speed automatic transmission with AMG steering-wheel gearshift paddles and DIRECT SELECT gearshift. The conventional automatic selector lever in the centre console is replaced by a lever on the steering column, which the driver nudges to select the transmission settings “P”, “N”, “R” and “D”.

The driver can use the “S/C/M” mode button in the centre console to select from the “Sport”, “Comfort” and “Manual” shift programmes that not only change the transmission characteristics but also the accelerator response and the spring/damper settings of the AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control. The gears can also be shifted at any time using the silver-coloured aluminium gearshift paddles on the AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel.

High torque requires a reinforced powertrain

The unrivalled 1000 Nm torque requires a systematically reinforced powertrain on the S 65 AMG. In the automatic transmission this includes newly developed clutch plates with a high-quality metallic coating and the modified shift and torque converter logic. Redesigned drive shafts, larger hub carriers as well as strengthened steel spring links supplement these measures.

AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control

The AMG sports suspension with the Active Body Control system is the perfect complement to the sophisticated drive technology. The active suspension reduces almost all of the body movements that occur when moving off, negotiating bends and braking. Bends are negotiated with far less roll; the body roll with fast evasive manoeuvring is effectively suppressed. Compared with the previous model, the second-generation Active Body Control is even more effective, for instance in reducing body movements in any given driving situation. Thus the S 65 AMG opens up new dimensions in dynamic handling – while offering appreciably improved ride comfort.

Unmistakable AMG bodystyling creates a distinctive look

Hallmark Mercedes elegance coupled with distinctive sportiness – the first impression you get from the new S 65 AMG. The new AMG bodystyling is combined superbly with the pronounced flared wheel arches, providing a markedly poised and assured appearance. At the front the redesigned AMG front apron with enlarged air intakes adds an athletic touch. The two slanted struts and integrated round fog lamps set in chrome rings make the S-Class look even wider and lower. The side skirts take up the line of the AMG front apron and emphasise the dynamic feel of the side view; all reinforced through the “V12 biturbo” lettering on the front wings.

The new multi-piece 19-inch five-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels with a star on the centre of the wheel painted in titanium grey blend harmoniously into the overall lines and represent additional highlights. The powerful AMG bodystyling design of the rear apron and the AMG sports exhaust system comprising two combined twin tailpipes in the new V12 design provide the perfect finishing touches.

Exclusive interior appointments with multicontour seats and “RACETIMER”

The exclusive interior appointments fit in perfectly with the dynamic exterior: open the door and the S 65 AMG welcomes the driver with a large AMG logo in the AMG instrument cluster’s central display. The integrated custom AMG main menu constantly displays the gear currently selected as well as ecommending when to shift up to the next gear. There is also a choice of engine oil temperature, the battery voltage or the “RACETIMER”. This new function enables the driver for the first time to calculate lap times in the AMG model – on a private racetrack, for instance. The RACETIMER stores the time of the fastest lap, the average and top speed as well as the lap distance; all the information can be called up conveniently using the thumb-operated buttons on the AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel. The AMG instrument cluster with its 360-km/h dial discreetly indicates the performance of the S 65 AMG.

The extensive burr walnut trim, the “Exclusive PASSION” leather upholstery and the AMG dynamic sports seats with their own distinctive design add that touch of distinctive flair. The AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel with its specially sculpted rim and the AMG aluminium gearshift paddles with “up” and “down” lettering is a joy to hold and behold. One of the most eye-catching features in the interior of the new S 65 AMG is the exclusive analogue clock with its “IWC Ingenieur” design in the centre console. High-quality AMG door sill panels provide the finishing touch for the interior.

Nissan at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show

Nissan Europe will present two bold and innovative concept cars at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show.

The Geneva Motor Show represents the world premiere of the Nissan Terranaut, a 4×4 vehicle which is intended for explorers and those customers with a spirit of adventure who want to travel to the extreme corners of the globe. While, at the other extreme is the Pivo battery-powered city car, first seen at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2005, which has been designed to serve customers who want freedom and mobility in the busiest of urban environments.

The Terranaut was conceived to serve as a mobile working environment for scientists, geologists, archaeologists or other adventurers who travel to the most challenging environments on the planet either for their work – or pleasure.

Its cabin is designed to accommodate three people – a driver, a passenger and, in the rear, where a scientist or specialist is well served with a computer console, as well as communication and analysis equipment to support them in their work.

A creation of London-based Nissan Design Europe, the overriding theme behind the concept is one of function. Project leader Felipe Roo Clefas, Assistant Chief Designer, NDE, says: “Terranaut has been designed for observation and communication in all four corners of the world.”

To accommodate the laboratory area within the cabin, the co-pilot’s side of the car has just one door, while the other side has a pair of swing doors and no central B-pillar. By hinging the doors at the front and rear respectively, ingress and egress is made easy.

Nineteen-inch wheels are covered by tyres specially constructed for Terranaut by Goodyear. Puncture proof, they function as conventional road tyres when the vehicle is being driven on metalled roads but, by changing air pressure, transform themselves into chunky off-road tyres.

Inside the vehicle, the spherical science laboratory dominates the entire cabin area behind the two front seats. A single revolving seat with an integrated computer keyboard is situated beneath the glass roof dome and gives the scientist complete 360-degree access to the various workstations found in Terranaut.

At the other end of the scale, the Pivo examines the future potential of the electric vehicle in a city environment. It is powered by a Nissan-developed high performance Compact Lithium-ion battery and Nissan’s own electric Super Motor.

Nissan’s design team in Japan has been able to develop an extremely compact body to give Pivo the perfect footprint for the city. Although just 2,700mm from bumper to bumper, Pivo will seat three in comfort, with the driver placed centrally and ahead of the two passengers in the rear of the cabin. Thanks to its narrow width – just 1,600 mm – it can be squeezed down busy streets and parked almost anywhere with ease.

But Pivo’s pièce de résistance lies in its cabin which, as its names implies, pivots through 360 degrees and means you’ll never have to reverse again: Pivo can be driven straight into a parking slot and, once the body has been swivelled around to face the opposite direction, driven straight out again.

The egg-shaped revolving body has other benefits. The tall, electrically-powered sliding doors, for example, make ingress and egress easy with little or no chance for bumped heads while ‘see-through’ pillars and Nissan’s Around View Monitor mean that blind spots are all but eliminated.

Cameras mounted on the outside of each A-pillar relay an accurate picture of the surroundings to screens within the pillars turning them into virtual windows. More cameras mounted at both ends and on both sides of the car allow the Around View Monitor to generate a 360-degree view of the car’s surroundings on a dashboard monitor. An innovative image processing technique converts these images into a single bird’s-eye view.

“When creating these two concepts, our objective was to explore the ultimate diversity of consumer needs. And, in common with the entire Nissan range, they have been created to provide drivers with an experience that goes beyond mere transportation. Both are built on Nissan’s key strengths: the capability to scrutinise specific consumer needs and the power to deliver the best of technology,” said Carlos Tavares, Executive Vice President, Product Planning and Corporate Strategy, Nissan Motor Limited.

In addition, the Nissan stand will display all six vehicles which have been launched in 2005: Murano, 350Z Roadster, Pathfinder SUV, Navara King and Double Cab pick ups and the Micra C+C. In addition, the NOTE, Nissan’s new compact family car, will be on display just as sales start across Europe.

GM Announces Corvette Chief Engineer David Hill to Retire

DETROIT - General Motors Corp. announced today that David Hill, currently vehicle chief engineer (VCE) of the Chevrolet Corvette and vehicle line executive (VLE) of performance cars, will retire effective Jan. 1, 2006 after more than 41 years of dedicated service.

Tom Wallace will replace Hill as vehicle line executive of performance cars and vehicle chief engineer of the Corvette. This is familiar territory for the innovative Sport Trac, which first defined the sport-utility truck segment in 2001 by blending the attributes of a sport-utility vehicle and a pickup truck. Six years later, this successful formula still has yet to be matched.

Click To View Complete Ford Explorer Sport Trac Gallery

Today, there are number of vehicles in Sport Trac’s price range that offer four doors and a pickup truck bed. Most are simply four-door compact pickups, such as the Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab, the Dodge Dakota Quad Cab, the Toyota Tacoma Double Cab and the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab. While these offer the utility of a pickup, they lack the Sport Trac’s modern SUV refinement and passenger comfort. The only remaining competitor is the Honda Ridgeline, which uses car-based components to deliver refinement at the expense of the Sport Trac’s true pickup durability and capability.

Family Values: Sport Trac benefits from lessons learned on both Explorer and F-150

The secret to Sport Trac’s success is it benefits from Ford’s experience producing both the best-selling SUV and the best-selling pickup in the world. The Ford Explorer and Ford F-150 influenced the development of the all-new 2007 Sport Trac in three significant ways:

First, the Sport Trac benefits from Ford’s unmatched customer understanding, according to Barry Redler, SUV Group marketing manager:

“There is a core group of SUV owners who emphatically feel that only a traditional, fully capable SUV fulfills their vehicle needs. A similar group of truck owners won’t consider driving anything other than a truck. In between, there’s a group of customers whose needs are not completely satisfied by either an SUV or a pickup. They carry friends and family regularly, necessitating the comfort and accommodations of an SUV. But, their work and hobbies require the cargo capacity and utility that only a pickup bed can satisfy. For these buyers, only the Sport Trac truly fits their lifestyle and needs.”

Second, the Sport Trac engineering team drew upon the expertise accumulated from building more than thirty five million Explorers and F-Series trucks. This includes adopting the tube-through-tube frame architecture first introduced on the F-150, and engineering validation using the same Built Ford Tough standards as every Ford truck.

“Every truck and body-on-frame SUV is subject to the same ‘ Truck Route ’ test schedule,” says Raj Nair, SUV and Body-on-Frame Vehicles executive director. “We subjected the Sport Trac to the same battery of durability tests as an F-350.”

Finally, the Sport Trac benefits from sharing many of the innovative and class-leading features first introduced on Explorer and F-Series. The Sport Trac’s tailgate design comes from F-150. The Explorer provides Sport Trac with a class-exclusive six-speed automatic transmission, the most powerful V-8 in its class, 10 standard advanced safety features, and independent rear suspension.

Market Niche: Sport Trac plays a significant role in Ford’s portfolio

Sport Trac sales have been remarkably consistent since its introduction as a 2001 model. Since then, an average of 5000 people have bought Sport Tracs every month, a testament to the Sport Trac’s successful, unmatched combination of utility and comfort. It also serves as evidence that this core group of SUT buyers – like the core truck and SUV buyers – are strong, consistent force in the automotive market.

In addition, Sport Trac attracts new buyers to the Ford family, many of whom become some of Ford’s most enthusiastic supporters.

“Sport Trac is among the highest conquest vehicles for Ford,” says Bryan Olson, Sport Trac marketing manager. “Almost 52 percent of Sport Trac buyers come from outside the Ford family, second only to 54 percent of Mustang buyers. Like Mustang owners, Sport Trac owners tend to be very enthusiastic about their vehicles, and become advocates for the company. They are also extremely loyal, as the majority of Sport Trac owners turn their vehicles in for either a new Sport Trac, an Explorer or an F-150.”

Olson, who worked at Land Rover before transitioning to Ford Division, also sees similarities between Sport Trac buyers and their anglophile counterparts:

“Actually, there is a lot in common with Sport Trac and Land Rover buyers. Both groups want their vehicles to be capable and functional, able to do anything they dream of. But, they also want creature comforts, luxury and distinctive style with their capability. They are also both like a club, a niche among themselves. There’s nothing like a Land Rover, and there’s nothing like a Sport Trac.”

For Olson, the 2007 Sport Trac is the perfect sequel to the original.

“We kept everything customers loved about the original, such as the distinctive style, comfortable cabin, large cargo box, functional tie-downs, cargo power point, even the rubber floor covering. In addition, the 2007 Sport Trac adds a V-8 for increased capability, and all-new chassis with IRS for increased refinement and control, the most standard safety features in its class, and a long-list of exclusive amenities.”

Grassroots enthusiasm: More than 10,000 registered owners at mysporttrac.com

An example of owner enthusiasm is mysporttrac.com, a grassroots, on-line organization created by Sport Trac owner Rich Stern. The site boasts more than 10,000 registered owners, and up to 2,000 forum postings every month. In addition to discussion forums and galleries of vehicle modifications, mysporttrac.com has hosted four national Sport Trac rallies, and dozens of local meets across the United States .

Stern, an Information Technology consultant from Atlanta , originally created the site for another of his hobbies, bass fishing.

“I designed the enthusiast website programming as a professional learning exercise,” says Stern. “At the same time, I found there wasn’t a good online source for information on the Sport Trac. I adapted the framework from the bass fishing site, and launched mysporttrac.com in September 2000. People started showing up really quick, and soon mysporttrac.com eclipsed the fishing site.”

According to Stern, more than 10,000 people are registered on mysporttrac.com, and 2000 people actively post on the site’s forums, owner projects, and Sport Trac of the Week sections every month. In addition, mysporttrac.com has helped owners organize approximately 70 regional rallies, as well as four national rallies.

“The first meeting was six people in the parking lot of a diner,” says Stern. “More than 70 Sport Tracs came to our last national rally, which was at the Louisville assembly plant.”

Stern will be attending the Texas State Fair, just to see the unveiling of the new model. He also expects between 100 and 200 other Sport Trac owners will make the pilgrimage. Stern hopes that the registered owners on the website will eventually coalesce into a national enthusiast club, similar to that of the Ford Mustang.

Stern has had his Estate Green 2001 Sport Trac for five years, and has accumulated more than 54,000 miles on the odometer. Like many owners, Stern bought his Sport Trac because it uniquely fit his needs.

“I wanted something comfortable enough I could take clients out to lunch,” says Stern. “But, I also needed something to pull my bass boat with. I considered an Explorer, but an SUV doesn’t wasn’t ideal. I often fish by myself, in the winter. With an SUV, that requires getting in the water to load and unload the boat. With the Sport Trac, I could walk from the bed into the boat, without stepping into the cold water.”

Stern’s biggest concern with the Sport Trac? New car fever.

“I absolutely love my Sport Trac. It’s done everything I hoped it would, and I don’t see any need to replace it. Then again, if the new Sport Trac is as big a jump in refinement as the Explorer was from the 2000 to the 2002 model, I’m going to have serious case of the new-car jitters.”

Considering the 2007 model’s dramatic improvements, Stern should bring his checkbook to the Texas State Fair.

The BMW 130i - A New Dimension in Driving Pleasure

Click To View Complete BMW 130i Gallery

The dynamic performance of a thoroughbred sports car and the everyday driving qualities of a compact five-door saloon – precisely this is the combination so many passionate motorists have been waiting for so long. And now their wish is coming true: The BMW 130i offers sheer driving pleasure of a standard never seen before.

Boasting a 195 kW (265 bhp) straight-six power unit, the new BMW 130i enters a world of power and performance previously to be found only in motorsport. Displacing three litres, featuring VALVETRONIC valve management and revolutionary lightweight engineering, the power unit of the BMW 130i enters a new dimension in terms of superior power and all-round efficiency. This new straight-six is indeed the first production engine in the world with an extremely light composite magnesium/aluminium crankcase, superior engine technology giving the BMW 130i unique all-round qualities.

Rear-wheel drive, the most advanced and sophisticated suspension technology, as well as a perfect balance of weight offer all the ingredients for truly exceptional agility, directional stability, and steering precision. One of the additional innovations featured by the BMW 130i is BMW’s revolutionary Active Steering*. Yet another new feature in this segment is DSC Dynamic Stability Control of the latest generation now also comprising an extended brake function for enhanced comfort and safety on the road.

The result of all these features is a driving experience quite unparalleled not only within the compact class. Indeed, the BMW 130i reigns supreme as the top model within BMW’s highly successful 1 Series already so popular in the market today.

Benefiting from their drive concept conceived and designed for supreme driving pleasure, the four-cylinder BMW 116i, 118i and 120i gasoline engine versions, as well as the BMW 118d and 120d diesel models, have already hit the headlines through their drive concept focusing on superior driving pleasure. And now the BMW 130i extends the successful story of the 1 Series model range by adding a particularly thrilling new version in this class.

A Genuine BMW – and a New Driving Experience in the Compact Class.

Click To View Complete BMW 130i Gallery

Powerful engines and the transmission of power to the rear wheels ensure supreme driving pleasure of the highest standard, four doors, a large tailgate, and the highly versatile and very practical interior guarantee superior function all round. Indeed, it is precisely this concept which gives the BMW 1 Series its particular character as the only car in the compact class featuring rear-wheel drive and, as a result, all the driving and handling qualities so typical of a genuine BMW: superior dynamics, safe handling and optimum traction in every situation. And now the BMW 130i lifts the driving pleasure provided in this way to an even higher standard than before.

The concept of combining a high-performance engine with rear-wheel drive in a compact car gave BMW’s engine development specialists the great reputation for the first time almost 40 years ago to have a particularly good feeling for driving pleasure in its purest form. And the thrill of this idea has remained unchanged to this very day, the BMW 130i now marking the climax in converting this concept into practical benefits on the road.

Click To View Complete BMW 130i Gallery

With its compact exterior dimensions, an extremely short body overhang at the front, low weight, wide track and – at 2.66 metres or 104.7 inches – the longest wheelbase in its class, the BMW 1 Series offers the very best ingredients for supreme agility. Added to this, there is the ideal weight distribution of almost 50:50 front-to-rear, a harmonious balance of axle load ensuring safe handling in spontaneous steering manoeuvres, together with supreme directional stability in fast bends thanks to centrifugal forces acting equally on the front and rear wheels.

The newly developed five-arm rear axle ideally supports the particularly sporting overall set-up of the car refined once again for the BMW 130i, at the same time raising roll comfort to a new and even higher level. With its stiff structures, straight, rod-shaped arms and short levers, the innovative lightweight steel structure ensures extremely precise wheel guidance.

Click To View Complete BMW 130i Gallery

The particular design and layout of the front axle also benefits the BMW 1 Series, particularly in terms of optimised driving dynamics. The double-joint spring strut tiebar axle, together with its anti-roll bar, is made largely of aluminium, combining low weight with exceptional strength and stiffness.

The benefits of this innovative suspension technology come to bear in particular in interaction with the transmission of power to the rear wheels, the BMW 1 Series combining impressive directional stability with supreme precision also at high speeds. Another outstanding strength of the car is its spontaneous response to even the smallest movements of the steering wheel and gas pedal. At the same time the BMW 1 Series is not affected by drive forces acting on the steering, which inevitably occur on front-wheel-drive cars. But the driver nevertheless receives exact feedback on road conditions at all times via the steering.

BMW’s Revolutionary Active Steering – now also in the BMW 1 Series.

Available for the first time in this class, Active Steering* in the BMW 130i ensures unparalleled, ultra-smooth and precise steering qualities at all times, the steering transmission ratio and steering support automatically adjusting to the current speed of the car on the road. Hence, the driver is able to guide the car precisely into every new bend, regardless of his road speed at the time.

The driver also finds it a lot easier to change direction at low speeds, since he only has to turn the steering wheel slightly, for example, when parking. At high speeds, in turn, the steering transmission also ensures optimum precision, maintaining a less direct reaction geared to the current road speed of the car.

The Power Unit – an Outstanding Achievement not just in the Compact Class.

Click To View Complete BMW 130i Gallery

The BMW 1 Series excels in particular through its unusually active character and all-round performance on the road. Through its unique concept, it now offers all the fascinating qualities of a BMW also in the compact class. And the BMW 130i, in particular, guarantees an all-new dimension in terms of dynamic performance, the generation and transmission of power by and from the engine going far beyond usual categories and standards.

The BMW 130i owes this supreme position in particular to a power unit setting a new milestone in the area of engine construction not only in the compact class: Displacing 2,996 cubic centimetres, developing maximum output of 195 kW (265 bhp), and generating peak torque of 315 Nm throughout a wide speed range from 2,500–4,000 rpm, the straight-six power unit featured in this unique car is among the most sophisticated, powerful, effective and, at the same time, lightest engines of its kind the world over. Here, therefore, the customer benefits from spontaneous power and performance combined with exemplary smoothness and economy to provide a mixture of qualities never seen before.

Weighing just 161 kilos or 355 lb, BMW’s new straight-six is the world’s lightest engine in its class. Inter alia, the weight of the engine has been optimised by an innovative magnesium/aluminium composite crankcase. Another 27 per cent lighter than aluminium, the magnesium used in the crankcase reduces weight most significantly in comparison with conventional grey-cast-iron components.

BMW’s fully variable VALVETRONIC valve drive, together with infinite camshaft adjustment (VANOS) on both the intake and outlet valves, guarantees a particularly fascinating rendition of all-round efficiency. Featured in a straight-six for the first time, VALVETRONIC, as opposed to a conventional throttle butterfly power unit, ensures a significantly improved response and, at the same time, far greater efficiency in the economic use of fuel. As a result, every movement of the gas pedal in the BMW 130i is translated directly and with supreme accuracy in the dosage of fuel into driving dynamics on the road. And at the same time the car’s fuel consumption and emission figures are exceptionally good for a vehicle with this kind of performance.

A further feature deserving particular attention is the specially designed exhaust system with two chrome-plated tailpipes adding exactly the right sound effect for each and every movement of the gas pedal and, through its sporting but rumbling sound, contributing significantly to the unique thrill of the new BMW 130i.

BMW’s three-litre straight-six is acknowledged as the symbol of superior drivetrain technology – particularly in its latest configuration. Indeed, this engine is the role model and benchmark for engine development specialists the world over, at the same time offering all the ideal qualities appreciated so much by the sporting and ambitious driver.

The outstanding properties of this unique power unit are featured within BMW’s model range in a number of different cars and classes: The BMW 630i Coupé, for example, receives all its impressive supremacy, motoring culture and efficiency from this outstanding straight-six, while in the BMW 530i the new power unit guarantees a perfect blend of motoring comfort and dynamic performance. And in the new BMW 330i, finally, the three-litre in-line six-cylinder helps the entire model series, further enhance its leadership in terms of driving pleasure.

Taking the decision to offer this power unit also beneath the hood of the BMW 1 Series, BMW has paved the way to a driving experience which can hardly be described in words alone, even less so by simple facts and figures. Still, the car’s performance figures and data are most certainly very impressive, the BMW 130i featuring a six-speed manual gearbox as standard accelerating from 0–100 km/h in just 6.1 seconds. Top speed, in turn, is limited electronically to 250 km/h or 155 mph. And despite this performance truly outstanding not only in the compact class, the BMW 130i makes do on average with fuel consumption of just 9.2 litres/100 km or 30.7 mpg Imp.

Occupant Safety of the Highest Standard.
Not least through the use of high-strength steel, the body structure of the BMW 130i is extremely stiff and stable, providing the foundation for supreme agility and guaranteeing safe and secure driving behaviour even in a sudden lane change or turn on the road. At the same time the body lives up in full to the unique dynamic potential of the BMW 130i, offering all the safety reserves required should the worst ever come to the worst in order to ensure a wide range of all-round occupant safety.

In the event of a collision, an elaborately conceived system of longitudinal and transverse support bars carefully and efficiently takes up all forces acting on the car, the passenger cell itself remaining largely unaffected by impact forces and the loads acting on the occupants being reduced to a minimum. The extensive safety package within the car comprises three-point inertia-reel belts on all seats, frontal airbags activated in two stages, side airbags at the front as well as curtain head airbags inflating around the side windows to protect both the front and rear passengers from injury.

The airbag system as well as the belt latch tensioners and belt force limiters are activated and masterminded by means of the most advanced control technology. Depending on the type and intensity of a collision, only those components are activated which are actually required to ensure optimum occupant safety. The flow of power from the battery, in turn, is automatically interrupted in the event of a collision by means of the safety battery terminal deactivating the fuel pump, opening the door locks, and switching on both the hazard warning flashers and the interior lights.

To ensure safe transportation of small passengers, the BMW 1 Series offers the option to fit up to three child seats in position by means of ISOFIX fasteners*. Where necessary, the front passenger’s airbag may be deactivated for this purpose by means of a special key switch.

The BMW 1 Series has already proven the efficiency and all-round protection offered by its safety features in the Euro-NCAP crash test, completing this demanding trial with the maximum score of five stars.

New Technology for Active Safety.
The high standard of driving stability so characteristic of the BMW 1 Series is ultimately also an important safety factor. Nevertheless, even a car of this calibre may exceed the limits to its driving dynamics in an unforeseeable situation – which is precisely why the BMW 1 Series has all the technical features required to significantly reduce the risk of an accident. Should, for example, a sudden manoeuvre serving to avoid an obstacle or an unexpected change in road conditions lead to an extremely difficult situation, DSC Dynamic Stability Control serves to keep the car on course, the system applying the brakes specifically on individual wheels to prevent the car from swerving out of control.

The BMW 130i is the only model in the 1 Series to be fitted exclusively with the latest generation of DSC Dynamic Stability Control. This superior system offers an even wider range of sophisticated brake functions serving above all to minimise the car’s stopping distance and at the same time to maintain directional stability when applying the brakes in a bend by spreading out brake forces according to current requirements. A further point is that the brake pads are applied lightly to the brake linings at regular intervals in wet weather, to provide a “dry braking effect” and to prevent the usual delay in the response of the brakes otherwise encountered in rain and wet weather. A further advantageous feature is automatic pre-loading of the brake discs whenever the driver suddenly takes his foot off the gas pedal, which serves to significantly shorten response times.

A feature already well known and integrated in all of BMW’s DSC systems is DBC Dynamic Brake Control providing similar safety and superiority in the braking process. A further function preventing the car from oversteering in a bend when applying the brakes lightly is CBC Cornering Brake Control, while EBFD Electronic Brake Force Distribution shares out brake forces according to current requirements. All of these are additional functions of the DSC and ABS driving stability systems.

ASC Automatic Stability Control helps to ensure safe traction when setting off on a slippery or rough surface, while yet a further additional function of BMW’s latest-generation DSC prevents the car from rolling back when setting off on a gradient. And last but certainly not least, DSC Dynamic Stability Control also comes with a special mode – DTC Dynamic Traction Control – providing a higher level of wheel slip.

Yet a further safety feature never seen before in the compact class is BMW’s Adaptive Headlight Control* now featured in the BMW 130i and also becoming available in all other models in the 1 Series: Following the steering wheel, the headlights move in the right direction immediately when the car enters a bend, illuminating the road ahead in the right angle and reliably guiding the driver in the right direction.

A Brake System also for Vehicles Following from Behind.

Click To View Complete BMW 130i Gallery

Reflecting its superior performance, the BMW 130i comes with a particularly powerful and efficient brake system. Extra-large brake discs both front and rear ensure the best deceleration and stopping power in this class. Absolute reliability, in turn, is guaranteed by the ongoing, continuous-action brake pad wear indicator, sensors monitoring the brake pads for their current condition.

Taking the driver’s style of motoring into account, a control unit monitors and calculates the remaining service life of the brake pads – a feature never seen before in the compact class. The driver is then able to check out this information at any time on the large colour monitor* at the central top position of the instrument panel or retrieve the data via the on-board computer between the speedometer and rev counter, just as he is able to call up the remaining lifetime of other parts subject to wear and tear.

Like the four-cylinder versions in the BMW 1 Series, the BMW 130i is equipped with BMW’s two-stage Brake Force Display quite unique in the compact class. Introducing this innovation, BMW is indeed making a significant contribution to the avoidance of rear-end collisions. When applying the brakes under normal conditions, the brake lights in the BMW 130i will come on the usual way. When applying the brakes all-out or when activating the anti-lock brake system, in turn, the brakes will automatically come on over a larger area. With their particularly brilliant effect under such conditions, the brake lights inform drivers following from behind that there is a dangerous situation ahead. The stronger light signal will then induce the driver of a vehicle following from behind to press down the brake pedal harder himself.

Ease of Control with Luxury Class Standards.
The ease of control ensured by BMW’s iDrive* control concept is absolutely unique in the compact class and sets the standard also for other segments in the market. BMW iDrive is automatically included in the car’s wide range of features whenever the customer orders his BMW 130i with a navigation system. Simply by pressing, turning and moving the Controller in the centre console, the driver is able to initialise and mastermind all secondary and comfort functions as well as the set-up and operating modes of his car. Optimised menu guidance is presented on an extra-large Control Display in the upper area of the centre console.

Functions required particularly often such as the heating and air conditioning are activated by separate switches on the centre console, and buttons on the multifunction steering wheel serve to call up further settings and functions of particular importance while driving.

With the cockpit being clearly separated into a driving and comfort zone, and with its perfect finish to the last detail, the BMW 130i offers a standard of quality fully in line with all the demands made of even the most sophisticated premium car. As an option the driver is even able to control and mastermind numerous functions of his car via voice entry*.

The Interior – more Functional than in any other Sports Car.

Click To View Complete BMW 130i Gallery

The driver of the BMW 130i has the great opportunity to share the unique thrill of sporting performance in the compact class with up to four passengers. Apart from offering the passengers superior seats with superior comfort, the BMW 130i also comes with a most generous and, thanks to the rear seat bench tilting forwards, variable luggage compartment quite unusual for a sports car of this calibre: Depending on the position of the rear seat bench, luggage capacity varies from 330–1,150 litres (11.55–40.25 cu ft).

Click To View Complete BMW 130i Gallery

Swivelling up 1.80 metres or almost 6 feet, the tailgate ensures simple and convenient loading and unloading at the rear. It unlocks either by remote control or by pressing the tailgate handle with its integrated BMW logo. The maximum load of 500 kilos or more than 1,100 lb again underlines the practical benefits of the body concept in handling all kinds of transport requirements, Numerous storage boxes and compartments, the double floor in the luggage compartment, and the power socket in the rear also contribute to the car’s high standard of practical value and qualities in everyday use. A new feature in the compact class offered by the BMW 130i is the partition net* preventing cases, baggage and other items stored in the rear from sliding forward into the passenger compartment when applying the brakes all-out, thus serving to protect the car’s occupants.

Click To View Complete BMW 130i Gallery

The BMW 130i combines functional, comfort-oriented and sporting features with one another in a truly unique manner. The seats, for example, offer lasting comfort and a secure, safe seating position at all times. A wide range of adjustments and different seating positions also taking the requirements of particularly tall or small individuals into account, as well as the option to adjust the steering column for both reach and height, helps the driver find his – or her – ideal position at the wheel at all times.

The special arrangement of the gas, brake and clutch pedals in the BMW 130i is quite unique in the compact class: With the engine being fitted lengthwise, the pedals are exactly where they should be right in front of the driver’s seat, without being moved slightly to the right-hand side as is generally the case in cars with a transversely mounted engine. This enables the driver to find exactly the right seating position at the steering wheel of the BMW 130i optimum for active motoring and avoiding any body strain or cramp even on the longest distances.

A four-way lumbar support* is available as an option. Pneumatic adjustment of backrest width* on the sports seats* is a particular feature so far only available in the most sophisticated sports cars and coupés, giving the driver and front passenger exactly the side support they require at the simple touch of a button.

High-Tech Solutions for Comfort and Safety.
Comfort Access* enables the driver to start the engine and set off in his BMW 130i without even taking the key to the car out of his pocket: As soon as the driver walks up to the car, the key transmits a recognition signal and the doors are automatically unlocked when the driver pulls the door handle. Then all he has to do is press the starter button in order to start the engine.

Yet a further unique feature in the compact class is the outside illumination* around the doors directly linked in the BMW 130i to the interior light function: As soon as the driver or passengers unlock and open the doors, light-emitting diodes integrated in the door handles brightly illuminate the access area around the car.

The audio systems available in the BMW 1 Series are among the most powerful and sophisticated HiFi units of their kind. Particular highlights are the extra-large central woofers fitted as standard beneath the front seats as well as Logic7 studio technology*.

The BMW 130i comes as standard with the BMW Business CD radio.

Supplementing the car’s wide range of infotainment features, the 1 Series is available not only with sophisticated navigation systems*, but also with a Bluetooth interface* for mobile phones and the BMW Assist* telematics service including access to the internet*. So here again, the BMW 1 Series ranks alone within the compact class, offering features and qualities not to be found on any other car in this segment.

Permanent supervision of the battery serves to guarantee ongoing and
consistent reliability in the BMW 130i: As soon as the charge sensor monitoring the control unit recognises a lack or impairment of capacity, the feed of power to items serving comfort purposes only is automatically reduced, thus maintaining the battery capacity required for starting the engine.

Every drive in a BMW 130i is a most enjoyable experience right from the start – also thanks to the memory function integrated in the key to the car storing and saving individual positions and settings for each driver: The BMW 130i is able to “recognise” up to three different drivers through their personal keys, automatically calling up important functions as soon as the “appropriate” driver wishes to set off in the car. So getting into the BMW 130i, the driver will always find his or her “personal” settings pre-aligned right from the start.

The key automatically saves the last setting in the audio system (sound, volume, stations chosen), the air conditioning (temperature and air distribution) as well as the seats with electrical adjustment* and the position of the mirrors.

Tailoring the BMW 130i to Your Personal Requirements:
Making Your Choice just Eight Days Prior to the Start of Production.
Given its wide range of features and qualities, the BMW 130i is most definitely a truly unique car. And thanks to the equally wide choice of paintwork options, upholstery and interior equipment, as well as an unusual line-up of equipment quite exceptional in the compact class, the BMW 130i offers every customer exactly what he – or she – wishes to enjoy on the road.

Indeed, every BMW is a true expression of its owner’s personality. This also applies to the BMW 130i, which – like every BMW – is not built in a standardised process or with a definite, pre-determined range of equipment packages, but rather to the customer’s individual order, exactly as required. So it is virtually out of the question that two identical versions of the BMW 130i will come off the production line within the same year.

Clearly, diversity of this kind calls for sophisticated logistics – which is precisely why the BMW Group has developed a production system serving to ensure absolute reliability as well as flexibility prior to and during production: The Customer-Oriented Sales and Production Process closely coordinates all steps and operations in the production of a BMW. The big advantage for the customer is that he is able to make changes to the features and equipment of a car already ordered up to just eight days prior to the start of assembly.
